School Year
3 hours per day on school days, 8 hours per day on non-school days, weekly total not to exceed 18 hours. Work must be performed between the hours of 7 am and 7 pm.
Vacation (Non-School Periods)
8 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Work must be performed between the hours of 7 am and 7 pm, with the exception of the period of June 1 through Labor Day, when the hours of work must fall between 7 am and 9 pm.
TYPES OF EMPLOYMENT
The following types of jobs are prohibited for any person less than 16 years of age:
v Any place where clothing is commercially cleaned or laundered
v In or about a gasoline service station except as cashiers or merchandise markers
v With or in the proximity of any dangerous moving machinery (this includes power tools and meat slicing or dough mixing machinery)
v In a warehouse setting
v In any manufacturing occupation
v In any capacity on a construction site
v Any work involving ladders of scaffolding
v Serving alcoholic beverages
Work permits are required for all minors under the age 18 years who have not graduated from high school or passed the California High School Proficiency Exam. Minors must be enrolled in a comprehensive high school or approved alternative education program in order for work permits to be issued.
NOTE: Passing the GED out of state does not provide an acceptable exemption from California compulsory attendance laws or from California work permit regulations.
